- Abstract:
- An acronym is usually derived by using the first letter of each word in a phrase to form a
shortened version of the phrase (NASA, GSFC, EMD). Sometimes parts of a series of
words in a phrase are used to create the acronym (radar for radio detecting and ranging).
Acronyms are used to save space, but more than that they aid in communication by
allowing the reader (or speaker and listener) to concentrate on the message and not
lengthy, and sometimes cumbersome phrases (CORBA rather than "common object
request broker architecture").
The purpose of the Acronym List for the EMD Project is to define terminology used
within the EOSDIS Maintenance and Development (EMD) Project. The list was created
by EMD engineers and scientists and is maintained by the EMD Data Management
organization. (blr)
